The Olympia High School girls basketball team took on Sumner Spartans Saturday at 7 p.m. in Chick Rockey Gymnasium coming out short 69-28 to bring their overall season record to 10-4.
The Lady Bears had a strong start with a few shots from down range, however, lost that initial momentum fairly quickly in the first quarter as three-balls were unfortunately unresponsive and shots around the paint were denied. Senior captain Lauren Wolin said that “the momentum shifted away from us.”
The team was missing sophomore Sawyer Schaff on a moment’s notice which played into the battle. “Quick changes were made and players were shuffled around,” Wolin mentioned. Sophomore Hannah Kim played in both the varsity and junior varsity games. The Spartans have historically been a hard match: “Sumner is tough all around,” said Kim.
The Bears caught a few fouls and sank a couple of free throws. In the end, it was not enough as a tough Sumner team repeatedly scored from behind the arc. The Lady Bears were unable to catch up and the buzzer ended the game with a score of 69-28.
“We have a good record, but most importantly we make sure that everyone is positive as that’s how we play better,” said Wolin. Kim mentioned that the team is pursuing the State tournament at the Tacoma Dome. The Lady Bears are on the road to Puyallup High School to confront the Vikings on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
