On Tuesday, September 10th, the Olympia Girls Soccer team celebrated the Fettuccine Bowl with a 2-0 Win against cross-town rivals, Capital Cougars. The game was highly competitive with both teams not letting go.
The Bears showcased a strong defensive scheme by limiting the Cougars’ attempts in our own goal allowing the Bears’ offense to take over. This game was defensively run, with the Bears taking an early lead of 1-0 with a near midfield heave in the first half by Kim.
The Bears continued to fight in the second half with multiple saves by Freshman goalie Esther Pearson, Along with another goal late in the second half by Kim to secure a Bears win.
After missing her freshman season due to an ACL tear, Sophomore Hannah Kim delivered an outstanding performance, scoring both of the team’s two goals. Kim remarked on her experience: “It felt good to be back on the field and playing with people I’ve looked up to. Watching them play all last season was hard, so I was more than excited to play with my teammates and play against our rival team.”
Kim topped off the Fettucini Bowl with a 2-goal performance. “Going into the game I was nervous because I’d never played in a high school game before. But once I started to connect the dots and score the first goal, I knew it was going to be a good game. I couldn’t have played so well without the support and skill of the team,” Kim explained. She was nervous, but she didn’t let that stop her from having an amazing night for the Bears and helping them secure the 1st annual Fettucini Bowl.
The Bears also displayed impressive chemistry with many great passes and extreme support to one another. Junior Avery Draper elaborated on the importance: of support, “I think supporting each other is really important on the field because it brings us closer as a team and we will be able to overcome challenges during a game. We have a lot of trust in each other because we are always there to support each other which shows on the field by coming together as a team and having success.”
Junior Audrey Leneker added, “Our team has a super close connection and we always say team over self. Soccer is not an individual sport and everyone needs to be on the same page; encouragement and praise really help bond the team.” All of this is to show that the team shares strong connections.
The Bears are off to a good start with a 2-2 record and are looking forward to seeing further success on the field in the coming weeks.
