Last week, the Olympia Bears Volleyball team took on their cross-town rivals, the Capital Cougars. With the stands packed from both schools, the Bears crushed the Cougs in a clean sweep of 3 to 0. Two days later, they took down the Curtis Vikings in a 5-set thriller and now have a season record of 4-1 with much of the season.
Senior Kate Herrick led the girls to their win and remarked that it was “super fun having a huge crowd,” and “it definitely creates a lot of energy for the team which is a huge factor [for] momentum.” Herrick has had an amazing start to her senior season after returning from an ACL injury that kept her on the sidelines last year. She explained that her “love for the game of volleyball” and her teammates being “super positive and always there” for her were a “huge part of the mental side of coming back.” Herrick has shown undeniable strength on and off the court, evident as she flies around the court.
After taking down Curtis in a 5-set thriller last Thursday, Herrick is prepared and looking forward to the rest of her season saying that “as a team, [we’re] super excited to grow, and I think we can go far this season as we have a lot of potential.” Last year, the girls took 6th place at the State Tournament and are looking to go back this year. Their next match is against the Graham-Kapowsin Eagles, and next week, they take on the Sumner Spartans and Emerald Ridge Jaguars.
