Olympia High students eagerly await ski season, with White Pass as their top destination. Known for its accessibility, affordability, and diverse terrain, it offers an inviting atmosphere that keeps them returning yearly.
White Pass, about 2.5 hours from Olympia, offers a convenient drive for students. Although Crystal Mountain is slightly closer, students like Lila Owens find the extra 30 minutes worthwhile. “White Pass is a better location with more advanced slopes,” Owens said, highlighting its appeal for all skill levels. Compared to Mount Baker’s four-hour drive, White Pass is the more practical choice for a quick, rewarding ski trip.
Affordability plays a significant role in White Pass’s popularity. A full-day adult lift ticket at White Pass costs $85 during weekdays, compared to Crystal Mountain’s weekday rate of $129. Junior tickets (ages 9–16) are $57 at White Pass, whereas Crystal charges $117 for similar age groups. This substantial price difference makes White Pass an accessible option for students on a budget, allowing them to enjoy the slopes without breaking the bank.
Junior Elliot Arvidson, a beginner skier, finds White Pass welcoming and student-friendly. “My favorite spot is White Pass. Although I’ve only been a few times, I like how it’s close and beginner-friendly,” he shared. For Arvidson and others, White Pass is more than just a ski destination—it’s a place to build connections with friends while enjoying winter’s beauty.
White Pass’s varied slopes cater to beginners and advanced skiers alike, making it the perfect destination for groups with different experience levels. This versatility gives White Pass an edge over Crystal Mountain, which is often geared more toward seasoned skiers. For Olympia High students, this variety ensures everyone can find their niche, whether they’re carving down black diamond runs or mastering their first turns.
As winter break nears, Olympia High students eagerly plan group trips to White Pass, a beloved and affordable tradition offering adventure, connection, and lasting memories in the heart of their winter sports community.
