A booming beginning to the school year: kicking off Oly’s first “Open Mic” with a bang!
Oct 14, 2022
Olympia High School’s Open Mics happen the first Wednesday of every month, from 2:35-3:30 in the library. Grace Borden, the Open Mic opener, stated that she’d always been willing to jump right in because of the comfortable and relaxed environment despite being nervous, and felt especially brave opening on Wednesday. October’s Open Mic, according to many participants, was one of the most successful to occur. Performers and spectators brought the most energy ever known to the event.
Similar to Borden, many performers noted the specialty of the setting. Lucy Mckay, a stand-up comedian at the event, said “I’m nervous, obviously…but I know that everyone in there is so open-minded and not judgmental to anyone that goes up there because it’s just an open space to express what you want to express.” Borden and Mckay both commented about how the event boosted their confidence in public speaking.
Long-time returner Cassini Love, who had been coming to Open Mics since Open Mic began, observed how this Open Mic had a variety of musical performances when historically there had never been more than two. Love laughed, commenting how there was a lot of clapping at today’s Open Mic, when in previous times there had been little to none. Although it may seem like a small detail, cheering shows the growth of the Open Mic.
Stacy Udo, OHS librarian, reflects on the growth of the Open Mic as well, stating that “Open Mic has been really special to her” since she and English teacher Carolyn Gilman started the event in 2019. Udo discussed how the Open Mic has become much more positive and inclusive as more people found their way. Udo talks about how she and Gilman started inviting clubs, such as poetry and guitar club, which helped to build the community. “It just brought in a larger group of kids to showcase their talents and their interest,” Udo remarks. “Having a little more intention and having a pretty good group of kids excited about it and looking forward to it helps.”
The Open Mic had people snapping, humming, and even dancing along in support of performers. Everybody was enthusiastic and engaged. Acts that stood out to spectators include Sam Odell’s guitar playing, Lucy Mckay’s stand up comedy, and various poetry performances. Udo says “My hope is that as more students realize they have a space to do this, it will become even more popular.” As for the future of the Open Mic, “I would love to offer a couple evening sessions where even more kids could get involved.”
