The highly anticipated Spotify Wrapped is finally out, resulting in hundreds of OHS students checking their phones first-thing on December 4th. Though Wrapped is always fun to view and share with friends, some have exclaimed disappointment in comparison to last year’s version of Wrapped.
One reason for this disappointment is because students have noticed a lack of interesting statistics. Senior Aleena Alam says “it wasn’t as nearly as detailed as last year’s,” with the rest of the general public seemingly in agreement. The specialized December feature is noticeably missing fan-favorite statistics like top genres, streaming habits and more. Previous student teacher Dawson Haworth expressed that he wanted to see the location statistic from the 2023 version of Wrapped; “[he needed] it to tell [him] the place [he’s] most like.”
On the other hand, a small chunk of students were completely content with their Wrapped. Some individuals didn’t mind the extra features’ presence, caring solely about if their Wrapped represented their music taste correctly. Sophomore Kaitlyn Dickason is one of these individuals, expressing she “[felt] like it was accurate to [who she is].”
Though a let-down to many, the 2024 Wrapped doesn’t come completely empty-handed in terms of special statistics. Spotify has introduced a new “evolution” feature; this addition takes your most prominent genres and categorizes them into personalized eras tailored to a specific month that the genre was listened to the most. These phases come with quirky names, some common examples being “Rainy Day Christian Contemporary,” “Wild West Banjo Country” and “Pink Pilates Princess Pop.” But there have been countless other names already discovered.
Though the hype was off the charts, it seems that the 2024 version of Spotify Wrapped might be a forgettable one. All the praise of this year’s Wrapped was greatly exceeded with double the amount of complaints, leaving OHS students and music fans alike feeling like this year’s Wrapped was stale and lackluster.
