About us
Who we are
Founded in 1904, The Olympus is the official student-run newspaper of Olympia High School. As an open forum for student expression, we amplify the voices of our peers and strive to uphold the highest standards of truth, integrity and journalistic excellence.
Our motto, “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land, and upon all the inhabitants thereof,” reflects our deep commitment to the freedom of the press and to serving our school community through responsible reporting.
Our mission
The Olympus seeks to provide meaningful, accurate and timely news that informs and engages our readers. We believe the press exists to serve the truth – and without truth, the words of the press lose all value. Every article, editorial and feature is crafted with the understanding that journalism is both a civic responsibility and an art form.
Editorial policy
The Editorial Board consists of the Editor-in-Chief, the Section Editors and the Adviser. The Board holds the exclusive right to publish or withhold any piece of media. Final decisions lie with the Editor-in-Chief, which ensures student freedom of expression in school-sponsored media according to the New Voices Act SSB 5064).
Letters to the editor
We welcome thoughtful and respectful letters to the editor. Letters must be clearly stated as letters to the editor and include the author’s name. Letters are subject to review by the Editorial Board.
Submissions and community contributions
Community members/students may submit original writing for publication, pending approval by the Editorial Board. All submissions will be verified for accuracy and edited for clarity and style before publication.
Standards for reporting
All of our writers are expected to:
– Accurately quote sources, with minimal edits only for clarity
– Maintain professional language at all times
– Uphold neutrality in non-editorial pieces
– Follow journalistic ethics as outlined by the Society of Professional Journalists
Advertising
The Olympus is open to advertisements from businesses and organizations. All advertisements are subject to Editorial Board approval.
