In the spirit of camaraderie and intellectual growth, the OHS Chess Club has been quietly thriving in room 907 during Bear Time A. This enthusiastic group of students has been steadily growing over the past two years.
The ancient game of chess has been popular for thousands of years for its competitive nature and social value. When asked about why he advises the club, Advisor Andres Lopez explained: “I am not an expert at chess, but I appreciate how it brings so many students together during Bear Time.” The Chess Club provides a welcoming environment for students of all skill levels to learn about and bond over this timeless game.
Last year, the Chess Club made waves when they participated in a chess tournament in Centralia, allowing them the opportunity to showcase their growing skills. The club even made it all the way to the state competition level!
When asked about competitions, club president Jack Sherin stated that the competitive aspect of chess and the social benefits of the club are the primary reasons students continue to participate. The club is interested in continuing to explore how OHS could travel, participate in more tournaments, and possibly even host their own.
This growing club is a testament to Olympia High School’s talented community who want to meet similarly-minded people. It is a great space to foster strategic thinking and friendships extending far beyond the chess board. As the community of the Chess Club continues to thrive, it serves as a shining example of what everyone at OHS can aspire to be.
